Vedic Astrology Update

The significant transit this month occurs on May 1, 2024 when Jupiter changes signs, moving into the earth sign of Taurus. Akshaya Tritiya occurs on May 10, when the Sun and Moon are both exalted. Venus begins its transit through its own sign of Taurus on May 18, where it joins Jupiter. Assertive Mars will conjunct Rahu in the water sign of Pisces on May 19.

Jupiter moves into the fixed earth sign of Taurus on May 1, 2024 and remains there until May 14, 2025. The last time Jupiter was in Taurus was from May 2012 to May 2013. Jupiter takes a year or so to move through a sign, so this is an important shift. Jupiter in Taurus brings the need for a more practical, grounded, and simplified life. We see the value in working in harmony with the natural world, being more creative, and connecting with our authentic friends and family. Prosperity increases when we are more giving and charitable. It is also a time to be realistic with finances and spending. The downside is inflexibility and issues changing long-held beliefs as Taurus is a fixed sign, with some resistance to change quickly.

Akshaya Tritiya, a very auspicious day in the Vedic calendar, is on May 10 this year. This occurs on the third lunar day of the waxing Moon in either April or May, when both the Sun and Moon are exalted, which increases the positive solar and lunar energies. It is said that on this day the sacred Ganges River descended to earth from heaven. Traditionally, any new venture or undertaking begun on this day is supported and brings enduring and increased prosperity. Helping others and charitable offerings are also highly favored this day.

Venus moves into Taurus, its own sign, the evening of May 18, 2024 and remains there until June 12, 2024. Venus is very happy here, and increases the need for stability in love, closeness to family, and being in a comfortable and safe environment. Venus in Taurus wants strong commitment and purpose in relationships. This is also a good transit for creative and artistic endeavors, as we want beauty around us.

When Venus moves into Taurus it joins Jupiter, and these two benefic planets traveling together can increase our desire for generosity, compassion, and helpfulness. Venus and Jupiter are also the two teacher planets in Vedic astrology, so this is a good time for educational pursuits and learning new things. Venus and Jupiter will exactly conjunct on May 23 at 5 degrees Taurus.

However, during periods in May, both Venus and Jupiter will be traveling very close to the Sun, which is called combustion. This can weaken the planet, as it becomes overwhelmed by the strong energies of the Sun. When combust, Venus and Jupiter energies need to be validated and strengthened in positive ways. We have an opportunity now to deepen our connection to these two planets. And as both Venus and Jupiter rule prosperity and finance, we must watch for overindulgence or excessive spending, or we may find our resources are low, and therefore we spend less. This is a good time to review your financial situation and focus on your true values in life.

From May 14 to May 24, Jupiter combustion is stronger, so we can feel a lack of purpose in life or not feel worthy. We may find it harder to change rigid beliefs that do not serve us. This is a perfect time to boost the positive energies of Jupiter by helping those in need or volunteering your time to important causes. This is also a period to be dedicated and focused on your spiritual practices or sadhana.

Venus combust the Sun occurs from May 18 through the end of the month and even into June. This period can create hypersensitivity around love and relationships, and brings up feelings of not being appreciated or seen. This is a time to heal and deeply connect to your heart, work on any self-esteem issues, and forgive. Allow yourself to be creative and practice compassion to self and all living beings.

On May 19, 2024 Mars conjuncts the north node Rahu at 20 degrees in the sensitive water sign of Pisces. These two planets are not so friendly with each other, and issues around power, control, ambition, and courage can arise. Mars/Rahu can also increase one’s energy, so use discernment in how you channel this ambitious power. Focus on your inner courage. Watch for any excessive emotional responses with others and direct this amplified energy into peaceful and life-affirming interactions and expressions.
