Kundalini Yoga Mantra Meditation

When we explore the roots of many modern-day cultures and languages, we can notice that they sound very different than the ones we speak today. Why is that, we may ask? One of the fundamental differences is the chakra with which we speak. In the English language, we can notice that the primary energy center we speak from is the throat. When we look at other languages like Spanish, the heart is more involved. Out of all the languages we use today, there are not many that go into the lower chakras like the root or sacral. This is where we express more of our primal sounds.

These languages were mostly used in the tribal communities of our ancestors. Why is this relevant or important? The capability that we have for self-expression is very limited with our English language, unless we are consciously aware of it. With regular practice and full body awareness we can tap into a much more powerful expression even when speaking English, or another similar language for that matter. This will not only shift the place from where we are speaking, but also energize us and foster a more clear direction where we want to go.

By now you might be wanting to know how this can be practically done. There are many methods that could be used to go about this. One way can be to clear and open up the lower chakras with crystals or other healing modalities like reiki or mantra meditation. A very streamlined way of opening up these channels is with language itself. There is a language that is used in the Kundalini Yoga tradition called Gurmukhi. This is also referred to as the language of sound or the language of naad. This language is particularly different as it fully utilizes the 84 meridians or pressure points we have inside of our mouth. Similar to Chinese acupuncture, the meridians are connected to other points in the body, our organs, extremities etc.

With the use of Gurmukhi, we are essentially programming the body with our tongue as if we were punching codes into a keypad. These “programs”, commonly referred to as mantras, can assist us in removing blocks from the body, align our chakras, call in whatever we want in our life, and so much more. If there is something you are going through in your life’s journey, I am sure that there is a mantra for it. In Kundalini Yoga, it is said that the whole purpose of doing the physical postures is to get to the mantra meditation practice at the end. Not to mention, the movement will help quiet the mind and more easily access a deeper meditative space. Ultimately, providing more impactful results. When done and pronounced properly, these mantras can have a profound effect not only in our mind and body but our overall consciousness.

There is a particular mantra that has been used to open the chakras for the full effect of any other mantra which is the Antar Naad Mudra meditation. In the past, anyone who sought mastery in mantra was required to master this mantra before moving on to another. The reason is it helps establish a connection between the navel and the throat. The navel is physically located about 2 to 4 inches below the belly button in our sacral chakra. The sacral chakra is our second chakra where we hold our creative life force energy. There is a very inherent and natural connection between the sacral and the throat chakra that can be found in numerous ancient traditions around the world. In the Kundalini Yoga tradition, it is said the navel center, when stimulated regularly, can help us have more vitality in our lives and even substitute the need for stimulants like coffee. Which is one of the reasons why the breath of fire is so often used in many of the kundalini yoga practices.

The Antar Naad Mudra meditation has the ability to give us more life force, prosperity, and amplitude to our expression. It uses very simple primal sounds that assist us in tapping deeper into our bodies, all the way down to our navel center. The sounds are Sa Ray Sa Sa, Sa Ray Sa Sa, Sa Ray Sa Sa Sa Rang, Har Ray Har Har, Har Ray Har Har, Har Ray Har Har, Har Rang. Soundtracks have been created for this particular mantra and can make it a lot easier to follow when practicing, as it can be a little tricky at first. The key when chanting this is to pay special attention to our navel center to ensure it is being pumped with each and every breath so as to bring our life force energy up and out the throat center.

This meditation is combined with a hand gesture also known as a mudra and a straight spine to assist in the movement of the energy up and through the chakras. The mudra utilized is with both arms extended straight, while sitting with the legs crossed, and bringing the small fingertip and thumb to touch. In the Kundalini Yoga tradition, this small finger represents the planet mercury which has to do with the mind and communication. It is actually a subtle mudra that can also be used on its own, whenever we feel we could use an opening in our throat center to speak our truth or have a difficult conversation perhaps. When using it for the meditation it is important to note that the other 3 fingers should be held together pointing straight. This is usually pretty uncomfortable for most at first and could even be painful, however after continued practice the discomfort eventually subsides. The reason for this is the lack of a solid connection between the sacral and throat chakras.

This may bring up the question about the length of time or for how many days it is recommended to practice the meditation. As far as length, it is suggested to be done for either 11 or 31 minutes. When starting out, that can feel like you are going for eons, but do not be discouraged as it does get easier over time. If you are looking to unblock and open your chakras through utilizing this meditation, 40 days is what is recommended. If you are looking to create a new habit in your conscious and subconscious to speak more fully and openly with your body, 90 days is recommended. If you are looking to confirm and permanently integrate it into your consciousness, 120 days is recommended. If you are looking for mastery in your expression, regardless of the challenge or circumstance you face, 1000 days is recommended. I realize that may seem like a daunting feat, but I can confidently say that after working with this meditation for 120 days my life has not been the same. There is a profound adjustment in the navel center that manifests not only a deeper vocal expression, but also unlocks a greater level of confidence when communicating.
